Jazz Classes



At Howe Sound Dance Academy, we offer a variety of jazz classes, from competitive to non-competitive to AIDT exam. Our experienced instructors follow the syllabi of the Association of International Dance Teachers to ensure that you receive the highest quality training possible. This style builds upon the foundation of ballet technique, making it a great way to refine your skills and take your dancing to the next level. With its upbeat music and fun vibe, jazz dance is a great way to let loose and have fun while improving your dance abilities.

AIDT Pre-Primary Jazz: ages 6+ or early beginners
(Grade 1 at school, min Pre Primary RAD Ballet)

Classes are 1 hour in length. The beginnings of jazz technique and musicality are taught.

It is strongly recommended that students take the appropriate level ballet class to compliment this class.

AIDT Primary Jazz: ages 7-8
(Grade 2-3 at school, min Primary RAD Ballet)

Classes are 1 hour in length. The beginnings of jazz technique and musicality are taught.

It is strongly recommended that students take the appropriate level ballet class to compliment this class.

AIDT Gr 1: ages 8-9
(Grade 3-4 at school, min Gr 1 RAD Ballet)

Classes are 1 hour and 15 mins in length. Students continue to develop their jazz technique and musicality.

(Grade 4-6at school, min Gr 2 RAD Ballet)

Classes are 1 hour and 15 mins in length. Students continue to develop their jazz technique and musicality.

Turns, jumps, progressions and combinations are emphasized.

It is strongly recommended that students take the appropriate level ballet class to compliment this class.

AIDT Gr 3: ages 10-13
(Grade 5-8 at school, approx Gr 3 RAD Ballet)

Classes are 1 hour and 15 mins in length. Established pedagogy is introduced.

AIDT Final Grade: ages 11+
(Grade 6+ at school, approx Gr 5 Ballet)

Classes are 1 hour and 15 mins long.

This is the first of compulsory exams. Supplementary ballet classes are required for this level.

Performance Jazz 1-4: ages 7+

Classes are 1 hour hour in length.

These classes are non competitive and non exam classes. Students will learn the elements of jazz dance.

Jazz Competitive
(all levels)

These classes are 45 minutes in duration.

Students must audition for these classes and nly dance choreography for competition is worked on.

Enrollment in graded RAD exam class with intent to take ballet exam at the appropriate level, technique class at the appropriate level, "tricks & stretch" class at the appropriate level, performance or exam class in any discipline.

Jazz Technique: ages 9+

Classes are 45 minutes - 1.5 hours in length.

This is a supporting class for all dance disciplines, and specifically for students enrolled in competitive & exam classes. This will help with co-ordination, performance quality, strength, flexibility & stamina.

Black fitted yoga shorts, leotard & tights. No baggy tops. Jazz split soles (black) or half soles - teacher's discretion. Hair in a tight ponytail or French braid with no bangs.

Ages are a guideline only. Our professional staff are fully qualified instructors in a variety of dance disciplines and are experienced in instructing all age groups.
