In order to help prepare all competing students with stage fright, anxiety, performance quality and over all preparedness of going on stage, HSDA will hold the Pre Competition Show at Eagle Eye Theater Saturday Feb 18 7:30pm.  The Dress Rehearsal will be the same day in the afternoon, time is tbc.  As the venues you will be competing at do not have a non slip dance surface, Miss Blanchard will not be taking the non slip floor.

Competitive classes are for students wanting to take their dance experience a step further.  It also requires the enrolment in core classes (ballet, jazz, modern, lyrical and/or acro).  Competitions provide students with an opportunity to perform in an organized competitive environment against students from other schools in the region.  We participate in 3 competitions a year (typically March – May), entry fees are approx $40 per dance per entry, payment of which is the responsibility of the students.  Competition fees are non refundable.  Competitions can be any day of the week from 9am-9pm.

CANDIDATE APPLICATION FOR BALLET, JAZZ, LYRICAL, MODERN, ACRO COMPETITIVE CLASSES AGES 8+ years

Application process for the 2016-2017 HSDA Competitive Division is different for this year.  Students and parents of those interested in participating in the Competitive Division are required to attend a competition info meeting Saturday April 16 5:15pm at the Brackendale studio.

Applicants should be:

8 years old and over

Currently enrolled in at least 3 classes per week with excellent attendance

Wanting to take their dance experience up and commit to a group

Able to commit to a minimum of 4-5 hours of dance per week

Able to take and retain correction, consistently apply maximum effort into dance training

Able to be a positive role model to other dancers

Application forms will be available and should be returned no later than Sat April 30.   On this form you will be able to select which disciplines you are interested in.  Group placement will be based on the following:

Your application form

Technique improvement in the required disciplines thru out the past year

Attendance thru out the past year

Injury susceptibility thru out the past year

Class effort and work ethic thru out the past year

General class attitude thru out the past year

In some situations, RAD & AIDT exam results are considered

Notes for group placement:

  • Have your form filled in completely and handed in by the due date of Saturday April 30 at the Brackendale studio to Miss B.
  • Competitive classes can be any day of the week.  Please do not apply for a group that you don’t think you can commit to as it makes scheduling very difficult.
  • This is an application process, which means not everyone gets accepted.  You may be put with people younger than you or older than you, provided the abilities match.  It is about creating a strong competitive group, not being with your friends.  Regrettably if not enough candidates can be considered for a group, that group will not exist.
  • Acceptance and placement are made by the respective teacher, based on your attendance, work ethic, class effort, rate of improvement, general attitude and ability to take and apply corrections over the past year.  Ability, level, compatibility and age are also been taken into consideration.
  • You may not be with your friends.
  • If we feel that you require further training and development to be successful in our competitive programs, we encourage continuing taking dance classes and re audition next year.  Train hard in every class so that you are technically ready.   Focus on every exercise as if each combination were the entire class.  Preparing for auditions should be an ongoing activity; not only when you are expecting an audition.

COMPETITION GROUP INFORMATION

Competitive classes are for students wanting to take their dance experience a step further.  It also requires the enrolment in core classes (ballet, jazz, modern, lyrical and/or acro).  Competitions provide students with an opportunity to perform in an organized competitive environment against students from other schools in the region.  We participate in 3 competitions a year (typically March – May), entry fees are approx $40 per dance per entry, payment of which is the responsibility of the students.  Competition fees are non refundable.  Competitions can be any day of the week from 9am-9pm.

Please note that the competitive classes require a strong commitment.  Competing in a dance group is a team effort; students will be relying on one another to make their best effort.  Please ensure that you are willing and able to dedicate yourself to your groups and the competitions.  This means prioritizing attendance in core classes, choreography classes, and rehearsal and performance schedules over other commitments.  Failure to do so may result in dismissal from the group.

Students missing more than 2 choreography classes in a row and/or general poor attendance in core classes or display a lack of progress or poor attitude and disrespectfulness to their respective teacher and other students may have their placement within the group re assessed, put on probation or may be expelled from the group

Regrettably if a student has an extended family vacation, or vacations too close to competition dates (Feb-April) she/he may be asked not to perform or leave the group.

If a student is ill or has a medical condition preventing them to dance at a competitive level she/he may be asked not to participate.

Competitive classes are subject to the same hourly fee schedule and costume fee and non-competitive classes (with the understanding that competitive class costumes CAN run higher than $75 CND and there could be a balance owing).

ALL COMPETITIVE STUDENTS WILL REQUIRE EXTRA PRACTISES.  It is difficult to forecast if and how many privates extra classes will be required as groups’ progress at different rates, 2-5 classes is realistic.  This considered private tutoring.  The instructor providing the service enters a private service with you and can set their rate with you that they feel comfortable with.  Any monies go directly to the instructor.  The $25 per ½ hour estimation is based on the premium so that you know the highest you would have to pay.  However, it is up to the individual teacher to determine their rate (you can expect to pay $5-25 depending on how participants, length of lesson and relevant to instructor involved).  The idea is that the cost can be shared across all group members.

Participation in a competitive class also requires enrolment in core classes.  This is mandatory.  If you withdraw from a core class, your enrolment in the competitive class will be re evaluated.

Ballet Competitive all levels:  ballet class (x2 minimum) per week at the appropriate level and minimum of 1 technique/performance or exam class (ideally 2 extra classes)

Modern Competitive all levels:  ballet class at the appropriate level & and minimum of 1 technique/performance or exam class (ideally 2 extra classes)

Lyrical Competitive all levels:  ballet class at the appropriate level and minimum of 1 technique/performance or exam class (ideally 2 extra classes)
